With the rise of online courses and certifications, the question of whether university degree programs are still relevant in the tech industry has become a hot topic. While some argue that a university education is essential for success in the tech industry, others believe that it’s simply not worth the investment. Keep reading so you can find out our take on this subject. Is the tech degree a building block or a waste of time?
In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at the pros and cons of university degree programs in the tech industry, considering factors such as cost, quality of education, and the value of a diploma in the job market. We’ll also examine the importance of networking and self-development while attending university, especially for those who choose to study away from their hometown.
It’s worth mentioning that not all the tech degree programs are equally relevant in the tech industry.
Some programs are more geared towards theoretical knowledge and may not offer the hands-on experience and practical skills necessary to succeed in the tech industry. On the other hand, some university programs, such as those offered by top tech schools, are designed specifically to prepare students for careers in technology and can provide valuable connections and opportunities for internships and employment.
Additionally, the cost of university education varies greatly across the globe, and it’s important to consider the value for money when making your decision. While a university education in some countries may be expensive, it can also open up doors to a wealth of opportunities and provide a solid foundation for a successful tech career.
So, is a university degree program worth it in the tech industry? The answer, as with many things in life, is not a straightforward one. It ultimately depends on your personal circumstances, career goals, and the resources available to you.
However, one thing is certain, the importance of networking and self-development cannot be underestimated, regardless of whether you choose to pursue a university education or not. Building relationships and developing your skills and knowledge through networking, online courses, and self-study can provide valuable opportunities and support for your career in the tech industry.
From my point of view, the time spent getting a tech degree from The Technical University of Cluj-Napoca was full of valuable lessons, and had a significant impact in my development.
Even though not the technical skills, but my soft skills skyrocketed, I’ve made a lot of connections and friends, that years after, are still with me. Considering the pricing of a University Course in Romania is fairly low, I can say that it was totally worth it. Moreover, the engineering diploma helped me get an advantage over after competitors for some of my jobs, and reduced the taxes for other gigs I had. I’ll dive deeper in this subject on a future post in the “My Journey” part of the blog.
In conclusion, while a university education can be a valuable investment in your tech career, it’s not the only path to success. Whether you choose to pursue a university degree or not, the key to success in the tech industry is a combination of education, networking, and self-development.
